Is erxercise essential for weight loss?

It is possible to lose weight without exercising and in some cases this is necessary, for example in case of injuries or if the weight has reached dangerous levels. However in general weight loss is much easier to achieve with a combination of a good diet and an exercise program.

Benefits of exercise

The benefits of exercise reach far beyond the issue of weight control and even affect the ageing process. They include:

  • Improved muscle tone and consequently increased metabolic rate
  • Improved appetite regulation and positive influence on eating habits
  • Higher energy levels through better fitness
  • Increased enjoyment of day to day activities due to increased fitness
  • During exercise increased blood circulation, leading toimproved mental performance
  • Stabilisation of an instable emotional state through hormones released during exercise
  • Much improved digestive regularity, provided the diet is not sabotaging this
  • Extra calories burnt make it much easier to comply with calorific needs because more calories are burnt
  • What is the best exercise?

Some forms of exercise are very effective in terms of burning energy, such as running, walking or high energy aerobics classes. However the most important thing is that the exercise is enjoyable and is carried out on a regular basis for a minimum of an hour each time. Not everyone has the same preferences and some people enjoy a lonely walk in nature while others prefer a game of tennis or footy. Working out in the gym is a good idea in many cases as it improves muscle tone and hence metabolic rate.

How can I fit this exercise into my busy schedule?

Only very few of us truely have a schedule that will not allow us to fit in some exercise. When we write down all the things we do in a day, and how longthey take we are usually able to set priorities and spend a bit less time on someting that is less important than our health. Professional advice can help finding ways of doing this.
