CortisolAlso Hydroxy Cortisone.
Glucocorticoid produced in the adrenal cortex. Cortisol, like all steroid hormones, works by directly interacting with protein synthesis.
Cortisol stimulates glycogen formation and storage in the liver and decreases the utilisation of glucose. It stimulates protein breakdown and depeltion of protein stores and utilisation of fatty acids.
Cortisol levels are regulated by ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) which is produced in the hypotalamus.
Cortisol and Cortisone are used as anti-inflammatories in rheumatoid arthritis and also for many auto-immune diseases.
Therapy can cause many side effects including atrophy ofthe adrenal cortex, imbalances of electrolytes and nitrogen. It must always be gradually withdrawn.
What is Cortisol?steroid hormone produced from cholesterol via a series of enzymatic reactions some of which are located in the endoplasmic reticulum, others in the mitochondria. There is a shuttle mechanism required.
