Aldosterone

Mineralocorticoid, a steroid hormone produced in the adrenal cortex. It is the most potent hormone and is responsible for homeostasis of water, sodium and potassium.

It acts directly on the kidney by stimulating potassium excretion and sodium and water retention.

Aldosterone is stimulated by low sodium levels and dehydration as well as by reduced blood flow to the kidney. The latter causes a peptide Renin to transform the inactive Angiotensinogen into Angiotensin I, which is then activated by the Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) to Angiotensin II and stimulates Aldosterone secretion.

Angiotensin II is a powerful blood vessel constrictor and increases blood pressure.

What is Aldosterone?

Steroid Hormone produced from cholesterol using enyzmes located in the Endoplasmic Reticulum as well as in the Mitochondia; its synthesis requires a shuttle machnism between the compartments.
