Common Myths: Body weight
Body Mass Index is the ultimate indication of whether or not you are overweight
WRONG!
The Body Mass index was introduced largely for the American Population, so that they could relate their height to their weight. This index does not take into consideration how much muscle a person has. Using BMI an athletic person can have a result suggesting they are obese.
Body weight does not really matter, so long I feel good
WRONG!
The "feeling good" can be an illusion which can be kept up for many years. In the absence of physical activity and major acute health problems, most people can feel quite good with their excess weight because they have adjusted their lifestyle to accomodate it. However diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure may be quietly developing unnoticed and suddenly make a horrific change to lifestyle inevitable.
We are here for a good time, not a long time
WRONG!
Life will usually be shorter for people with that attitude but what do we mean by "having a good time" anyway?
Is it a good time lugging around all the extra weight with every little thing we do?
Lifestyle is indeed important and a long miserable life is not superior to a shorter fulfilled life in most people's view.
However, diabetes and heart disease (only to name the most commonest problems) can make one's life hell and destroy careers, families and relationships -
not what I would call a good time!!!
